If you are having trouble making ends meet, you may be able to get support through MaineCare, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), General Assistance, SNAP (Food Assistance), or other public assistance.
Applying for benefits can be difficult and discouraging. We listen without judging and do whatever we can to solve the problem, whether that means working with DHHS, giving information and support to solve the problem on your own, or referring you to someone else who can help. If you have been told that you can’t get benefits, but you think that you should qualify, contact us for help.

“I was enrolled in the Parents as Scholars program and had frequent problems getting help with childcare, transportation and books, services that are part of this program and that I needed to be successful.
When I called Maine Equal Justice, they were able to tell me exactly what the rules said about my rights and my responsibilities as a Parents as Scholars participant. With this information, and the support of Maine Equal Justice, I felt confident and empowered to advocate for myself. Occasionally, when I couldn’t make any progress, Maine Equal Justice would get involved.
Having Maine Equal Justice in my corner gave me what I needed to succeed, finish school, and get a good job. Now I use my advocacy skills to help people who have experienced domestic abuse.”
